Husqvarna Norden 901 is an amazing motorcycle but it is still not different from any other bike when it comes to problems, issues, and complaints by its owners.
Officially, this Husqvarna boy comes equipped with an 890cc, four-stroke, liquid cool engine generating 105 HP in power and 75 ft-lb in torque. Other than tech superiority, it has an impressive look, and a stunning build quality but a plethora of problems Husqvarna Norden 901 has in parallel.
Drawing from our experience with this motorcycle, we faced issues mostly related to the engine, suspension, and a couple of malfunctions.
However, after putting it to the test, fixing these issues is simple to make this Husqvarna Norden 901 great again and get rid of its problems with this helpful guide to fix its issues.
Husqvarna Norden 901 Problems
Husqvarna Norden 901 Problems mostly include engine overheating issues, the smell of fuel due to coolant or sometimes oil leaks, soft suspension, shifting issues, and TPMS malfunctioning. Deterioration of different parts, specifically the upper fairings and skid plate, poor gas gauge, valve issues, cam and cylinder issues, a noisy engine and exhaust, engine stalling, immobilizer problems, and unoptimized windshield causing severe wind buffeting and noise.
1. Engine Overheating And Fuel Odor
The very first possible problem for Husqvarna Norden 901 owners is to face engine overheating.
Sometimes, the heating impact is low and almost negligible. However, sometimes, it’s just bearable for some people. The other times, the heat is uncontrollable and it burns your leg almost similar to what you do to bacon and steaks.
The higher the surroundings and the bike’s temperature, the hotter this engine gets. Other than environmental reasons such as heat from the sun and to summer climate, the other factors are technical and what you should test and fix.
The first is the Coolant Leak which is real on this motorcycle since it’s a liquid cool machine. Make sure to drain the old and expired coolant, flush it, and replace the nice, effective, and fresh coolant if you haven’t done it for a long time.
Then, make sure to validate the fuel and coolant lines. Deterioration is real and it’s more damaging in hot climates, so validate and fix it ASAP.
Sometimes, the amount of heat that comes out of it becomes alarming and you need to give your machine a pause in summer. Yet, if you haven’t done the audit and maintenance of this motorcycle in a while, it’s more likely to happen. In winter, it’s likely to do good and fear-free.
There are several other reasons for overheating, but coolant-related issues are mostly the reason for Husqvarna Norden 901’s overheating problem, as per our investigations and findings.
Before you get into fixing the overheating issue, there’s another related issue you might face meanwhile. This one is the fuel odor. To avoid technicalities, let’s put it this way.
The motorcycle sometimes smells like fuel which affects the performance as well.
It could happen due to so many reasons such as failure of carbs, leakage of the fuel tank, lines, pump or fuel cap, dirty air filters, and mostly due to spark plug problems and rich fuel mixture issues.
You need to check relevant departments one after the other because it might be a different case for everyone. Once you find out the area of the problem, troubleshooting is not a big deal.
However, it is better to fix it as soon as possible, because your motorcycle is burning a lot of fuel.
2. Suspension And Shifting Issues
Usually, it’s the second biggest problem with this motorcycle, but it was the first biggest issue in our case. We had a tough time getting used to it since we have been generous with BMW, Triumph, and Ducati kinds of motorcycles.
Again, it all depends on one’s needs and choices.
Anyways, going through the suspension problem first, it has to be improved a lot and most of its owners will agree with us. This motorcycle’s overall suspension seems and feels pretty soft most of the time. If you prioritize comfort, it’s going to be good.
However, if you want to feel every bit of its power and torque, the stock suspension will be holding you back and prevent you from doing so.
If the latter is your choice, you can try rebuilding its shocks and replacing its imperfect stock shocks to mold it the way you love to see and feel it. Otherwise, it won’t be comfortable in the long run and you still have to replace it.
Husqvarna is using WP Apex Monoshocks for its rear suspension and 43mm fully adjustable WP Apex forks for its front suspension.
However, the adjustability is just on the paper because its adjustability is little or more limited. At some point, the same suspension might feel stiff to you.
Other than suspension issues and its replacement, the very next problem you might face is to have issues with the shifting department of this motorcycle.
Shifting is the most commonly faced issue on this motorcycle and according to our research, Norden riders face a tough time fixing it.
The shifting gets off track with the very first trouble of quick shifter issues. No doubt these quick shifters make your motorcycle easy to shift and provide a clutchless shifting experience, it rusts the clutch components on the other hand.
The very next shifting problem is that the motorcycle malfunctions in its 5th and 6th gear which occurs due to shift sensor issues.
The same issue can cause you a false neutral problem which sometimes grinds the gears with a lot of force and increases the chances of breaking these gears.
As a first solution, you can try reprogramming the ECU to hold back the shift sensor problem. If doing so doesn’t make any difference, you can try refreshing the gear oil and tuning it up well to get rid of any possible wear and tear.
Doing this will bring the relevant gears back together.
3. TPMS Malfunctioning And Parts Deterioration
Husq. Norden 901 has a TPMS, also known as Tire Pressure Monitoring System to monitor pressure and deliver the information to you on a screen as a measure of safety.
However, this important and informative component of Husqvarna Norden 901 malfunctions sometimes.
Luckily, the TPMS of this motorcycle is easy to configure technically and fixation is also not a big deal. Resetting the TPMS through your dealership can fix its malfunctioning and you can continue to get solid and improved data every time.
When we got this motorcycle for a trial, we figured out several of its parts were deteriorated or they were going to be sooner. Of course, it is subject to the unit we tested due to factors like how the owner had kept it, how well it was maintained and what was its frequency.
Yet again, the deterioration of parts will happen no matter what you do. The upper fairings and skid plate of the motorcycle engine are what is being affected the most.
However, it all depends on its maintenance and repair frequency.
It’s not specific to the list of problems but drawbacks.
4. Malfunctioning Gas Gauge And Valve Issues
Husqvarna Norden 901 has several gauges just like any other good motorcycle and a good motorcycle generally has a gas gauge as well.
Husqvarna Norden 901 does have one gas gauge, by the way. The official name of this specific gauge is fuel level gauge which shows the amount of gasoline your motorcycle is currently containing.
With this information, you can forecast your needs.
So, if you are going on a long ride and you see a low fuel warning, you can refill it without the fear of stopping your motorcycle in the middle of nowhere.
This gauge works with the help of a sensor but this little boy can fail just like any other electronic sensor. One of the Husqvarna Norden 901s we saw had a bad fuel gauge and the reason was a failure of its sensor.
The fuse can also be the reason and you need to replace it.
Yet, this was not much of a problem. The actual problem is failure and issues with its valves. These valves are mostly QC passed in the factory but sometimes they can be skimmed or malfunction later in the break-in period of the motorcycle.
This failure further leads to issues with the cam and cylinder which you can forecast if you notice a noisy engine. Remapping these valves and optimizing the valve clearance can fix such issues.
If the cylinder is not bolted perfectly, the valves can still mislead so make sure you check those bolts as well. Otherwise, it might turn one of its cylinders into a mug which is an expensive fix.
5. Engine Stalling And Wind Buffeting
I must say, Mankind has never been successful in developing a motorcycle that never stalls. So, if a motorcycle stalls, you should never be worried because it’s a normal thing. And, just like any other motorcycle out there, the Husqvarna Norden 901 stalls too.
You can not prevent this motorcycle from stalling, but you can identify the reasons and fix the issues to stop it in the future.
As for the wind buffeting, you should try replacing its windscreen and mount its screws as well as on the handlebar to fix the wind turbulence.
Through our practical knowledge and experience, the Husqvarna Norden 901 stalls mostly due to issues with a carburetor, spark plug, and fuel lines, and sometimes due to electrical failures as well, which however are less in ratio.
Husqvarna Norden 901 can also stall due to a cold start several times leading to running imperfectly. First of all, properly starting the engine is going to be a challenge in itself.
Secondly, even if it manages to start, the performance will never be at its peak or up to mark to fulfill your needs. You can try cleaning or replacing its faulty carburetor and spark plugs.
After doing so, you now need to look into its ignition as well as in electronics to make sure they are trouble-free. If they are, the stalling problem will be eliminated and Norden 901 will start and run flawlessly.
